We booked a 7 day Tour with Dennis. 2 days around samarinda, 5 days djungle trip. Let's start at the beginning. When we arrived in samarinda, Dennis and one of his daughters picked us up and drove us to his home where his wife, his kids and a bunch of puppies welcomed us with a hot drink. We then got introduced to our rooms(!), meaning that both of us had a separate room to stay in second floor with matress and fan. Amazing to have some privacy. Note – one mindblowing thing for us was Dennis bottle school which he built himself from recycled plastic bottles in order to teach english to local kids. Thumbs up! When we started our trip, Dennis showed us his hometown samarinda and got us to a nice viewpoint. Later that day we picked some leafs and roots from his garden for dinner. He describes it as easy food, but his wife is an excellent cook! Also, while at Dennis place, his home becomes your home, meaning that you can use everything without hesitation. In the evening we met some of his friends, having a little local drink, singing and dancing! Day two we headed outside of samarinda to camp at a hilltop. Unfortunately we had a heavy rain coming so we had to move to a friends place. Luckily Dennis has a loooot of connections and friends all over kalimantan. Through our whole trip we always had a place to sleep, shower, charge and eat, no matter where we went. They always welcomed us with open arms. Our djungle trip included visiting wooden village and floating village (Big recommendation to go there!!!), dayak tribe rituals and villages, longhouses, djungle trekking and a lot of sightseeing. For Dennis it is really important to show you the real kalimantan. That's why our trip was hard sometimes. "If you want to see the real kalimantan and djungle, you can't just cross the river and walk 10 minutes" he said. And he was right. Sometimes we drove long time and were very exhausted, but thats what we looked for and what we booked Dennis for and he nailed it. Every trip with Dennis is unique, he will ask you before what you want to experience and then provide everything. For our trip, we paid about 275 Euros each, including EVERYTHING (entrance fees, Tickets, 2 motorbikes, boat rides, food, etc, etc) except gasoline and water. No surprises. So I suggest you meet him before your trip as we did, have a talk and as soon as you shake hands your deal is set. Easy as that, Dennis is very easygoing. Of course, cost and experience can vary, because, like I said, every trip is unique. But be sure that he can provide almost everything because of his good connections all over kalimantan. If I ever happen to be there again, I will give him a call 100%.
